From a young age, Tyler Short had dreams of being a country star. However, until the age of 24 Short put his musical aspirations on the back burner and instead joined the family business; but then following a breakup a broken-hearted Short was looking for more and found it by way of music. Short’s latest single, “That’s Me”, displays Short as someone who is unapologetically himself not matter how much he may stick out from the crowd. Short has a fascinating story to tell and no desire to be anybody but himself.
Recently, we had the chance to chat with Short about his musical journey, “That’s Me”, and more.
Who would you describe as your biggest musical influences?
This can sometimes be such a tough question. Even as newer artist come to the surface they are also becoming an influence as well. As difficult as it may be my top 5, at this moment, would be Brooks & Dunn, Cody Jinks, Randy Rodgers Band, Cody Johnson, and Morgan Wallen.
When did you know music was what you wanted to do with your life?
Well, I’ve always dreamed about it and wanted it since I was a kid. Knowing, on the other hand, came a bit later in life. I always thought I was supposed to take over the family business. Long story short, I was 24 and just got done with a 3 1/2 year relationship and realized I needed to do what I wanted and loved. I was living for someone else all those years, it was time for me to step away from the family business and figure it out for myself.
What was your first step towards making this dream a reality?
Honestly, stepping away from music was the first step. in other words, falling flat on my face. It made me realize how much I love it and want it to be the life I live every day. I’ve never worked harder and haven’t looked back since my first time back on a stage after my hiatus.
How would you describe your musical style?
I guess you could say it’s a mix of ’90s and now. I’m not sure it’s up to me to decide what to call my style. I’m just here to write honest music that can hopefully relate to whoever wants and may need to hear it.
How important is it for you to connect your blue-collar upbringing with your songwriting?
It’s for sure one of the most important things for me. It’s my life and who I am. I sure don’t know what it’s like to fly on private jets, play pro sports or be in a box office movie. It’s one of the key pieces of my life and who I am.
What’s the story behind your new song “This Is Me”?
Haha. it all started with a pair of khakis and a polo. I was asked to dress a certain way by the girl I was dating and I declined. it wasn’t for any reason other than she didn’t want me wearing old jeans, a plain shirt, and my old hat to a family event. I thought on it for a day and kindly told her to kiss my ass, needless to say, that relationship ended shortly after. I got to talking with some friends and it sparked ideas reminding me of times I had been out with friends, sticking out because of my attire. from there it was pen to paper and off to writing.
What’s next for you?
Well, I don’t wanna give too much away but we have few things coming up. One of those would be an EP. Going to have to keep an eye out for all the good stuff in between!
